Why logos?

The purpose of a logo is to identify something, not to explain it.

This is nothing new: In ancient history we had hieroglyphics, and now we have emojis 👋 but no matter what we’re trying to communicate, symbols and icons help us to identify someone or something more quickly.

The logo design process is, in some ways, very simple. We create an icon which helps people to identify you.

Note: Logo design is a part of your brand identity, the second stage in building a brand: after strategy, and before creating any assets like a website or a promotional video.

The art and science of making a great logo

Building an incredible logo is a combination of art and science. The science comes first, as our logos are always based on strategy. Also, we use a simple metric to measure the effectiveness of a logo: we make them smart.

S: Simple. The best logos are simple, with a few exceptions.

M: Memorable. They make an impression, and could be recreated if you tried.

A: Appropriate. Logos are appropriate to their industry or genre.

R: Resizable. A good logo works in different media, including on socials and on billboards.

T: Timeless. The sign of a strong mark is that it stands the test of time.

As well as having a reliable framework for measuring the success of any potential designs, we have a seriously creative method for producing winning logos.

Step 1: Stylescapes

A stylescape is a visual representation of a brand, combining imagery, colours, type and layout styles which all work together to create a brand image reference.

It is similar to a mood board, but is more efficient and can be used as a quick guide and starting point for branding inspiration.

Based on your strategy, we produce three stylescape boards and present them to you either in-person or online.

These are then be evaluated and refined. We repeat this process until we feel like the creative direction for the brand has been agreed, and is perfectly summarised with a single stylescape.

Step 2: Logo Design

This is where the magic happens.

We’re in a great position now to begin constructing the brand logo mark. This process starts with lots of sketching, with potentially hundreds of ideas drawn out, with only a few making the cut and being process digitally.

Once the digital logos have been created, only the very best will make it into the logo presentation, where the logos are shown ‘in context’ with photo-realistic mockups exploring how the various ideas would look in real life use, based on your brand.

We always commit ourselves to unlimited revisions, working with you to create the perfect logo. Once this design has been signed off, we submit a final logo package which includes access to a master file, as well as a suite of logo variations to make sure you’re equipped.

Step 3: Brand Guidelines

Brand guidelines and logo for a client in Bristol

Brand guidelines help you, your team, and any future content-creators to stick to the game plan. This digital pdf document explains proper logo-usage, brand fonts, chosen colours, tone of voice guides as well as basic design styles to make sure everyone on your team (or outside of it!) is able to communicate in a way that honours the brand consistently across all your various touch points.

Guidelines can be produced with specific case-uses if required. For example: how to take the brand to social media, exploring brand architecture (how do sub-brands fit together), website mockups and more.
